Varanasi Ropeway Nears Completion: Cantt to Godowlia Journey in Just 16 Minutes

Varanasi: The much-awaited Varanasi ropeway project has reached an advanced stage, with nearly 95 per cent of the construction work reportedly completed. The ambitious urban transport initiative is expected to provide residents, pilgrims and tourists with a faster alternative to road travel, reducing dependence on congested city streets.

Once operational, the ropeway will connect Varanasi Cantt Railway Station with Godowlia, covering approximately 3.8 km in just 16 minutes. The same journey currently takes around 45 minutes or longer by road, depending on traffic conditions.

The project will have five stations along its route, including Varanasi Cantt, Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra and Godowlia. The proposed fare is expected to start at ₹50, making it an accessible transport option for regular commuters as well as visitors.

Relief from Traffic Congestion

The ropeway is expected to particularly benefit passengers arriving at Cantt Railway Station and travelling towards Godowlia, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and nearby commercial areas. These locations frequently experience heavy traffic, especially during festivals, religious events, the month of Sawan and Dev Deepawali.

By providing an elevated transport corridor, the project aims to reduce pressure on existing roads without requiring extensive road widening or large-scale land acquisition in the city’s densely populated areas.

95% Work Completed, Testing Preparations Underway

With construction reportedly 95 per cent complete, attention is now shifting towards finishing the remaining work and preparing the system for technical inspections and trial operations.

Before regular services begin, the cable system, passenger cabins, station facilities, boarding and deboarding arrangements, safety mechanisms and emergency response systems will undergo necessary checks.

The project is being developed with modern passenger facilities, including comfortable cabins and automated doors. Special attention is also being given to accessibility for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Boost to Religious and Cultural Tourism

The ropeway is expected to improve connectivity for pilgrims visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat, Godowlia and other prominent tourist destinations.

During peak pilgrimage seasons, the service could provide an alternative to road transport and help visitors avoid prolonged traffic delays. Passengers will also get an aerial view of Varanasi’s historic neighbourhoods, temples and urban landscape.

Potential Environmental Benefits

The ropeway could also contribute to more sustainable urban mobility by encouraging commuters and tourists to use an alternative to private vehicles. Higher passenger adoption could help reduce road congestion, fuel consumption and transport-related emissions.

The actual environmental benefits, however, will depend on passenger numbers and the extent to which the service reduces road-based travel.

The project represents an important addition to Varanasi’s urban transport infrastructure, combining the city’s traditional character with modern mobility solutions. Residents and visitors are now awaiting the completion of the remaining work, safety clearances and commencement of regular operations.
