Avatar Is the Supreme Guru, Says Swami Muktinathananda at Ramakrishna Math

Lucknow: The role of the Guru in guiding spiritual seekers and transforming lives through grace was the central theme of a morning spiritual discourse delivered by Swami Muktinathananda, President of Ramakrishna Math, Lucknow. Addressing devotees during the daily Sat Prasang, he said that an Avatar, or divine incarnation, represents the highest form of spiritual teacher, whose compassion and grace can lead seekers towards complete spiritual fulfilment.

Swami Muktinathananda explained that in the Indian spiritual tradition, a Guru is far more than an instructor. A true Guru shapes the disciple’s life, dispels ignorance and leads the individual towards God-realisation. Referring to the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, he said the revered saint presented a profound understanding of the Guru-disciple relationship through both his life and spiritual guidance.

Elaborating on Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings, the Swami said that spiritual teachers can be understood in four categories. The first is the Adham Acharya, who imparts knowledge but does little to guide the disciple thereafter. The second is the Madhyam Acharya, who continues to encourage and support the disciple’s spiritual progress. The third is the Uttam Acharya, who, when necessary, adopts a disciplined approach to help the disciple remain steadfast on the spiritual path.

Above all these, he said, stands the Supreme Acharya, the Avatar, who not only offers guidance but also accepts responsibility for the spiritual welfare of the disciple through boundless compassion and divine grace. Swami Muktinathananda described Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa as the perfect embodiment of this ideal, noting that he guided every seeker according to their individual temperament, circumstances and spiritual readiness.

The Swami cited the transformation of Girish Chandra Ghosh as one of the most striking examples of the power of a Guru’s grace. Despite being burdened by personal weaknesses and worldly habits, Girish found spiritual renewal through complete surrender to Sri Ramakrishna. His life, the Swami said, demonstrates that sincere devotion and surrender are more important than one’s past.

He also referred to the lives of Kalipada Ghosh and Surendranath Mitra, explaining how Sri Ramakrishna chose compassion over condemnation. Rather than forcing change, he gently guided them with simple spiritual practices that gradually transformed their lives and deepened their devotion.

According to Swami Muktinathananda, Sri Ramakrishna’s greatness lay not merely in his teachings but in his ability to awaken the innate divinity within every individual. Instead of focusing on people’s shortcomings, he recognised their spiritual potential and inspired them to realise it through love, patience and faith.

Concluding the discourse, the Swami said that wholehearted surrender to God and the Guru opens the path to spiritual growth and inner peace. He emphasised that the grace of a true Guru has the power to make even the impossible possible and urged devotees to embrace the ideals of faith, humility and self-surrender in their spiritual journey.
