Lucknow: Police have arrested the main accused in the fatal assault of a 30-year-old man in Lucknow’s Banthra area, while two sub-inspectors have been suspended for alleged negligence in handling the case.
The accused, Mahipal Singh, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sent to judicial custody following the death of Jitendra, a resident of Mawai Padiyana village, who succumbed to his injuries after undergoing treatment for 10 days.
According to police, the incident occurred on June 27, when Jitendra was riding his motorcycle towards Mawai crossing. His bike reportedly collided with a goat on the way, leading to an altercation. Investigators said Mahipal Singh, along with his nephews, allegedly assaulted Jitendra with sticks, causing serious injuries.
Jitendra later died during treatment, prompting his family to intensify demands for action against the accused. On Tuesday, relatives and local residents staged a protest, alleging that Banthra Police had failed to act despite earlier complaints. Demonstrators blocked the Fatehganj–Narayanpur Road for nearly four hours, demanding the arrest of those responsible.

Following the protest, police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Mahipal Singh, after which the road blockade was lifted.
In a parallel disciplinary action, Sub-Inspector Praveen Pal, the area in-charge, and Sub-Inspector Shashank Mishra, who was on night duty on the day of the incident, were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty and negligence in handling the case. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against both officers.
Banthra Station House Officer Rana Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed that Mahipal Singh has been arrested and sent to jail. He added that police are continuing the investigation to identify the role of other individuals allegedly involved in the assault.
The case has drawn attention to police accountability in responding promptly to complaints involving violent crimes, with authorities now pursuing both the criminal investigation and internal disciplinary proceedings simultaneously.
