“India Wala Dance Lives Within All of Us”: Geeta Kapoor on Passion, Technique and the Spirit of India’s Best Dancer

Mumbai: As India’s Best Dancer returns with its new theme ‘Apna Wala Dance’, celebrated choreographer and judge Geeta Kapoor opens up about the evolution of dance reality shows, the importance of individuality in performance, and the dedication required to succeed on a national platform.

Known for her warmth, sharp eye for talent, and years of mentoring young performers, Geeta Kapoor continues to inspire dancers across the country through her journey on the show.

Q: You have been associated with dance reality shows for many years. What keeps your journey with India’s Best Dancer exciting every season?

Geeta Kapoor:
My journey with India’s Best Dancer has always kept me on my toes because with every season, not only the dancers but dance itself continues to evolve. It has given me an opportunity to learn more about this art form and witness its growth with my own eyes. Every season brings fresh energy, new creativity, and different perspectives, which keeps the experience exciting for me as a mentor and judge.

Q: This season’s theme is ‘Apna Wala Dance’. From a mentor’s perspective, how important is it for dancers to discover and express their unique style?

Geeta Kapoor:
From a mentor’s point of view, every dancer should explore different dance styles first. That helps them understand which style comes naturally to them and which one they truly enjoy performing. Only then can they add their own individuality and unique qualities to it. We belong to the land of Bollywood, and I believe ‘India Wala Dance’ exists within all of us in some form.

Q: How important is it for dancers today to balance strong technique with emotional expression?

Geeta Kapoor:
I have always advised every aspiring dancer to properly learn this art form from a good institution or a knowledgeable guru so they can build a strong foundation. That foundation helps create solid technique, and when emotional expression is layered on top of it, only then does dance truly feel complete. Technique gives structure, while expression gives soul to the performance.

Q: What advice would you give to young dancers who dream of performing on a platform like India’s Best Dancer?

Geeta Kapoor:
I would simply say that anyone who wishes to come on this platform should first prepare themselves for the journey ahead. Keep an open mind to learning and remain patient because success never comes overnight. Be ready to work hard and adapt to different situations. Once you have that mindset, India’s Best Dancer can truly help polish your talent and create a strong path for your future.
