Lucknow: Yogi Adityanath has taken a major administrative decision ahead of the completion of the current Gram Panchayat tenure in Uttar Pradesh. With the term of village panchayats ending on May 26, 2026, the state government has decided to appoint outgoing village heads (Gram Pradhans) as administrators until the formation of new panchayats or for a maximum period of six months.
According to official directions issued under the instructions of the Chief Minister, all District Magistrates across the state have been authorized to designate outgoing Gram Pradhans as administrators from May 27, 2026 onward. The move is aimed at ensuring continuity in village-level administration and uninterrupted delivery of essential public services.
Under the arrangement, the outgoing village heads will be permitted to carry out only routine administrative and day-to-day functions of the Gram Panchayats. The government has made it clear that no policy-related or major financial decisions can be taken by the administrators during this interim period.
The state government has also laid down a mechanism for handling exceptional situations. If any urgent or policy-related decision becomes necessary, the proposal must first be routed through the District Panchayat Raj Officer and then placed before the District Magistrate for approval. Any such decision can only be implemented after formal clearance from the District Magistrate.

Officials noted that Gram Panchayats in the state function for a constitutionally mandated five-year term. Once the tenure ends, the state government is empowered to appoint administrators until newly elected panchayats are constituted.
The decision is being viewed as a significant administrative step by the Yogi government to maintain stability and continuity in rural governance across the state during the transition period.
