Mumbai: The glamour of the 79th Cannes Film Festival witnessed a strong social message this year as Bollywood actress Ruchi Gujjar used the iconic red carpet to speak against the age-old practice of forced veiling of women.
Dressed in a striking pink traditional Rajasthani lehenga adorned with silver zari embroidery, elaborate jewellery, and a transparent ghunghat, Ruchi blended cultural elegance with a bold statement on women’s identity and freedom. Through her symbolic appearance, she questioned whether traditions should continue to suppress the voice and individuality of women.
Speaking about her look, Ruchi Gujjar said she wore the veil not as a symbol of silence, but as a form of protest against practices that restrict women’s independence. “Women deserve respect through equality, confidence, and freedom,” she remarked.

The specially curated ensemble, designed by Roopa Sharma, quickly gained attention across social media and international fashion circles. Many fashion observers described it as one of India’s most socially impactful and fearless appearances at Cannes this year.
With her appearance, Ruchi Gujjar not only represented Indian heritage on a global stage but also sparked an important conversation on gender equality and social change.
