Rare Bloodless Liver Transplant Successfully Performed at Apollomedics Super Speciality Hospital

Lucknow: In a significant medical achievement for Uttar Pradesh, doctors at Apollomedics Super Speciality Hospital have successfully performed a complex liver transplant without administering a single unit of blood transfusion during the surgery — a rare feat in advanced transplant medicine.

The life-saving procedure was carried out on a 56-year-old patient from Mainpuri district who was suffering from end-stage liver disease and was in critical condition at the time of admission. Doctors said the patient had a MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) score of 30, indicating severe liver failure and an urgent need for transplantation.

In a courageous act, the patient’s 45-year-old wife came forward to donate a portion of her liver, enabling the transplant to proceed.

The surgery was led by Dr. Abhishek Yadav along with Dr. Utkarsh Srivastava and their multidisciplinary transplant team.

According to the doctors, liver transplant procedures are generally associated with heavy blood loss, often requiring multiple blood transfusions during surgery. In this case, however, the availability of blood donors was limited. Anticipating the challenge, the surgical team carefully planned the procedure using advanced blood-conservation strategies and highly precise operative techniques to minimize blood loss throughout the operation.

The team successfully completed the transplant without any blood transfusion, and the patient showed rapid recovery following surgery. While liver transplant recipients typically remain hospitalized for nearly three to four weeks, the patient was discharged just eight days after the procedure due to his steady improvement.

Dr. Abhishek Yadav said performing a liver transplant without blood transfusion is considered technically demanding and extremely uncommon, as most such surgeries traditionally require several units of blood. He added that meticulous planning, surgical precision, and coordinated perioperative care made the achievement possible.

Hospital officials stated that the transplant programme at Apollomedics has witnessed rapid growth, with the team successfully conducting 20 liver transplants over the past seven months, including several high-risk and complex cases. All patients are reportedly recovering well under continuous follow-up care.

Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Mayank Somani said the successful completion of such a highly challenging surgery without blood transfusion reflects the hospital’s advanced infrastructure, skilled specialists, and commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services in the region.

Medical experts described the case as an important milestone for liver transplant care in Lucknow, showcasing how advanced surgical expertise and modern medical technology are helping save critically ill patients closer to home.
