Hooghly (West Bengal): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath intensified his attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) during a public rally in the Dhanekhali Assembly constituency, alleging that the state has witnessed economic and cultural decline over the past 15 years.
Addressing a gathering in support of a BJP candidate ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Adityanath said that Bengal, once known for its rich heritage in art, literature, and industrial growth, has been pushed towards “backwardness and distress.”
“Bengal Reduced to Economic Weakness”
The Chief Minister claimed that successive governments—first the Congress, then Left parties, and now the TMC—have collectively contributed to what he described as Bengal’s weakened economic condition. “A state that was once the growth engine of India’s economy is now struggling,” he said, pointing to alleged industrial decline, unemployment, and farmer distress.
Criticism of TMC Leadership
Targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Adityanath alleged that expressions of certain religious slogans trigger political discomfort for the ruling leadership. He further accused the state government of selective handling of public events and failing to ensure a balanced approach.
Cultural and Historical References
During his speech, Adityanath invoked prominent historical and spiritual figures associated with Bengal, including Swami Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, highlighting Bengal’s legacy as a centre of spiritual and intellectual awakening.
He said that the state, which once led India in cultural and industrial advancement, is now facing challenges that require decisive political change.
Allegations on Governance and Law & Order
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister accused the TMC government of failing to maintain law and order and alleged rising incidents of violence and unrest. He claimed that sections of the population are dissatisfied and are “coming out on the streets” against what he termed as “misgovernance.”

Adityanath also reiterated his government’s approach in Uttar Pradesh, stating that since 2017, strict law enforcement and infrastructure development have transformed the state’s image.
Promises Under ‘Double Engine Government’
Projecting the BJP’s “double engine government” model, he said it would ensure:
- Improved governance and delivery of welfare schemes
- Better infrastructure and industrial growth
- Enhanced safety for women and traders
- Employment opportunities for youth
- Development of religious and cultural sites
He also referred to the possibility of developing major religious sites such as Taraknath Temple on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple corridor.
Political Messaging Ahead of Polls
Adityanath expressed confidence that the electorate is ready for change, citing early voting trends and growing political momentum. He urged voters to participate without fear and support what he described as a governance model focused on development and security.
The rally in Dhanekhali reflected the BJP’s aggressive campaign strategy in West Bengal, combining sharp criticism of the ruling TMC with promises of development and governance reforms. As the state heads toward crucial election phases, political rhetoric and voter mobilisation are expected to intensify further.
