Lucknow: Theatre lovers in the city are set to witness an evocative portrayal of one of literature’s most intriguing love stories, as the much-discussed two-character play ‘Woh Afsana’ will be staged on May 1 at MB Club Ground. The play is inspired by the deeply emotional yet unspoken relationship between legendary poet Sahir Ludhianvi and celebrated writer Amrita Pritam.
The production is being presented by Hunur Creation and Craft Association in collaboration with Rabtaa Delhi. Sharing details, organiser Zafar Nabi said the association is returning to theatre after a long gap, having previously focused on organising felicitation ceremonies and musical events.
Describing the play, Nabi highlighted that it delves into the intense yet largely unexpressed bond shared by Sahir and Amrita—marked by passion, selfless affection, and one-sided love. Rooted in documented accounts and extensive research, the narrative beautifully weaves together their poetry and key moments from their lives, offering audiences a poignant glimpse into their emotional world.
Directed by Shameer, the play has been compiled and adapted by Sudesh Sethi and Dr Jayshree Sethi. Shameer himself will take on the role of Sahir, while Dr. Jayshree Sethi will portray Amrita Pritam on stage.

Adding musical depth to the performance, vocals will be rendered by Shreya Arora and Javed. Behind the scenes, stage and production support will be managed by Shweta Mishra and Swati.
With its rich blend of poetry, emotion, and theatrical storytelling, ‘Woh Afsana’ promises to be a compelling cultural offering, bringing alive an enduring tale of love, longing, and literary brilliance for audiences in Lucknow.
