Visakhapatnam: The Indian Navy is set to commission the stealth frigate INS Taragiri on April 3, 2026, at Visakhapatnam, marking a significant step in enhancing India’s maritime security. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to attend the commissioning ceremony.
INS Taragiri is the fourth ship under the Project 17A programme, which focuses on the construction of advanced stealth frigates with modern combat capabilities and superior design. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, the frigate showcases India’s growing expertise in indigenous warship development. MDL, often referred to as the “Shipyard of the Indian Navy,” has been a cornerstone of India’s naval expansion.
The ship features advanced stealth technology, reducing its radar signature and enhancing survivability in high-threat environments. Armed for multi-dimensional warfare, INS Taragiri carries supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and anti-submarine warfare systems, all integrated through a modern Combat Management System (CMS) for faster decision-making and operational efficiency.
Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, the frigate balances high-speed performance with fuel efficiency. With a displacement of around 6,670 tonnes, it is capable of extended deployments in the Indian Ocean region, undertaking missions ranging from patrols and escort operations to combat engagements.

Supporting the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, over 75% of INS Taragiri’s components are indigenous, with contributions from more than 200 MSMEs. The project strengthens India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, boosts employment, and promotes technological advancement.
INS Taragiri is expected to play a vital role in safeguarding Indian Ocean security, reinforcing the Navy’s operational capabilities, and highlighting India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence.
