Lucknow: In the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approval has been granted to promulgate the Uttar Pradesh Anand Marriage Registration Rules 2026 to simplify the registration of marriages in the Sikh community.
The rules are being implemented to facilitate the registration of Anand Karaj marriages practiced in Sikhism. The arrangement has been framed under the powers granted to the state government under Section 6 of the Anand Marriage Act 1909.
The decision has also been taken in compliance with the directions issued by the Supreme Court of India on September 4, 2025 in the writ petition Amanjot Singh Chadha vs Union of India and Others.
Under the new rules, for the registration of Anand marriages, the Sub Divisional Magistrate at the tehsil level will be designated as Registrar, the District Magistrate at the district level as District Registrar, the Divisional Commissioner at the division level as Divisional Registrar and the Director, Minority Welfare and Waqf at the state headquarters as Chief Registrar.

According to the rules, the parties to the marriage or their relatives will be able to apply for marriage registration within three months from the date of solemnization in the prescribed format along with a court fee stamp of ₹1500. Applications can also be submitted after the stipulated time, but a delay fee will have to be paid as per the rules.
In addition, if any party is dissatisfied with the order of the Registrar, an appeal can be filed before the District Registrar. A further appeal against the order of the District Registrar can be made before the Divisional Registrar. Provisions related to the maintenance of the marriage register and obtaining certified copies have also been included in the rules.
The implementation of these rules will make formal registration of Anand marriages easier for the Sikh community in the state and will enhance transparency and convenience in administrative procedures related to marriage.
