Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is set to take a major leap in strengthening its traditional silk sector as the Centre of Excellence being developed at the UP Silk Directorate nears completion. Envisioned under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ambitious ‘Soil to Silk’ initiative, the facility is designed to showcase the entire silk production journey—from cultivation to finished fabric—under one roof.
Being constructed at a cost of ₹75 lakh within the Silk Directorate’s office, the Centre of Excellence is expected to be completed by the end of this month. The project aims to provide global visibility to Uttar Pradesh’s rich silk heritage while creating new avenues for employment, training and direct market access for farmers and artisans.
The centre will offer a live, immersive display of the silk-making process, highlighting how silkworms are reared on mulberry and arjun trees for mulberry and tussar silk, how cocoons are processed into silk yarn, and how the yarn is woven on handlooms and power looms. Alongside this, a dedicated display and sales zone will feature the state’s finest silk products, many of which were earlier accessible mainly through exports.
Assistant Directors at the Silk Directorate, Nirendra Kumar and Ashutosh, said the centre will showcase iconic products such as Varanasi silk sarees, Bhadohi brocade, Mirzapur tussar silk and handloom textiles from other districts. A retail outlet will enable tourists and buyers to purchase directly from local artisans, ensuring better returns. A changing room facility is also being developed to enhance the visitor experience.

Equipped with modern technology, the Centre of Excellence will include interactive displays, workshops and a training centre. Farmers will receive scientific training in sericulture, from silkworm rearing to processing, while artisans will gain exposure to improved techniques and market trends. Guided tours and workshops are also planned to spark interest among youth.
Although Uttar Pradesh is among India’s leading silk-producing states, challenges related to marketing, awareness and fair pricing have long affected artisans. Officials believe that initiatives like the Chief Minister’s Silk Development Scheme and the Centre of Excellence will help bridge these gaps.
Beyond economic impact, the project is expected to energise the rural economy and play a crucial role in preserving Uttar Pradesh’s traditional enterprises and cultural legacy, firmly translating the ‘Soil to Silk’ vision into reality.
