A Moment of Grief and Solidarity: Omar Abdullah’s Emotional Address

Srinagar – In the aftermath of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah delivered an emotional address in the Legislative Assembly, expressing deep condolences to the families of the  victims. He emphasized that this was not the time for political opportunism, specifically refraining from demanding the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdullah stated, “We stand with the families of the 26 people who were killed and express our heartfelt sympathy. This is not the time to demand full statehood from the central government. We do not engage in such cheap politics. It is the responsibility of the elected government of Jammu and Kashmir to ensure that the environment remains peaceful and that our guests are safe.”

He further articulated his stance on the statehood issue, saying, “On this occasion, I will not demand statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. How can I, in good conscience, demand statehood for Jammu and Kashmir at this moment? We will always demand statehood, but if I make such a demand today, I would be worthy of condemnation.”

Instead, Abdullah focused on the collective grief and the need for unity, calling for strong condemnation of the attack and expressing solidarity with the bereaved families. He also praised the exemplary role of the local people in providing assistance during the crisis.

“Hotel owners vacated their rooms, saying, ‘You stay here.’ Auto drivers offered to take people to their destinations without charging any fare. I salute this Kashmiriyat. This is our hospitality. Adil saved lives without caring for his own. Local people made every effort to help. This is the beginning of the end of terrorism. We must ensure that no step is taken that alienates our own people,” he said.

He also mentioned the silent prayers held in mosques before Friday prayers, acknowledging the community’s collective mourning. Abdullah addressed the issue of misinformation, urging people to refrain from spreading false news on social media, highlighting the detrimental impact it has on people’s lives.

“We can control terrorism with guns, but we cannot eradicate it. It is the responsibility of the elected government of Jammu and Kashmir. On this occasion, I will not demand statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. How can I, in good conscience, demand statehood for Jammu and Kashmir at this moment? We will always demand statehood, but if I make such a demand today, I would be worthy of condemnation.”

When some members of the assembly attempted to applaud his speech by thumping their desks, Abdullah gently rebuked them, saying, “This is not an appropriate time for such gestures.”

Abdullah’s address resonated deeply, emphasizing the need for compassion, unity, and responsible leadership in the face of tragedy. His words underscored the importance of focusing on the victims and their families, and reaffirming the spirit of Kashmiriyat, which embodies hospitality and solidarity.
