Prayagraj: In a significant development ahead of the Mahakumbh 2025, Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (UP ATS) arrested Manish Srivastava, also known by his aliases Rakesh and Ganesh, for his alleged involvement in Naxalite activities. The arrest was made on Sunday in the Shivkuti area of Prayagraj. Srivastava, who has a history of serious criminal charges, has been sent to jail.
This arrest has heightened security concerns as preparations for the grand religious event, Mahakumbh, are underway.
Focus on Mahakumbh Security
Mahakumbh 2025, scheduled to begin on January 13, is expected to attract an estimated 40 crore devotees. With the enormity of the event, both state and central intelligence agencies are on high alert. Comprehensive security arrangements have been made in and around the Mela area to ensure the safety of pilgrims and smooth conduct of the event.
Accused Facing Grave Charges
According to the Shivkuti police, Srivastava was apprehended in the Govindpur locality. He has previously been jailed for involvement in Naxalite activities and was recently released on bail. The ATS has booked him under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Sections 13, 18, and 38.
Past Raids and Seizures
In 2019, the ATS had filed an FIR against Srivastava for his involvement in Naxalite operations. Subsequent raids were conducted in Bhopal, Kanpur, Deoria, and Kushinagar, leading to the recovery of electronic devices and incriminating documents. During these investigations, fake identity proofs, including voter IDs, Aadhaar cards, and bank passbooks, were seized from Srivastava and his accomplice Amita Srivastava.
Interrogation and Key Revelations
The ATS interrogated Srivastava for several hours, uncovering critical details that could provide leads in ongoing investigations. While officials have refrained from directly linking his arrest to Mahakumbh, the incident has amplified security measures to counter potential threats.
Security Agencies on High Alert
Given prior warnings from terrorist organizations, security agencies have been maintaining a vigilant stance in the lead-up to Mahakumbh. This arrest has further prompted the authorities to tighten surveillance in the Mela area. Every activity is being closely monitored, and officials are not ruling out the possibility of more arrests in the coming days.
The swift action by UP ATS underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to safeguard Mahakumbh 2025 from any untoward incidents. Investigations are ongoing, and additional developments are expected as authorities deepen their probe into Srivastava’s activities and network.
