Lucknow: An emotionally charged theatrical presentation titled ‘Woh Afsana’ brought alive the poignant, unspoken love story of legendary literary figures Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam, leaving the audience deeply moved at an event organized at the MB Club in the Cantonment area on Friday.
Staged by Hunar Creation and Craft Association in collaboration with Delhi-based Rabta group, the play was directed by Shamir and offered a lyrical tribute to what is widely regarded as one of the most compelling real-life love stories of the 20th century.
The programme was attended by distinguished guests, including Lieutenant General Anindya Sen, while Chief of Staff, Central Command, Lt Gen C.J. Jayachandran, felicitated the artists for their performance.
A Timeless Tale of Love and Longing
Drawing from documented facts and extensive research, ‘Woh Afsana’ wove together poetry, life events, and emotional moments from the lives of Sahir and Amrita. The narrative captured the essence of their intense yet unfulfilled relationship—marked by longing, admiration, and silent devotion.
The title itself echoed Sahir’s immortal lines about leaving an incomplete story at a beautiful turning point, a sentiment that resonated throughout the performance and touched the audience profoundly.
Music and Poetry Breathe Life into the Narrative
The play stood out for its seamless integration of poetry and music. Amrita’s evocative Punjabi verses were interwoven with Sahir’s timeless songs such as “Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein,” “Jaane Woh Kaise Log The,” “Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar,” and “Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya,” among others. These compositions added emotional depth, portraying the ache of unexpressed love and the beauty of incompleteness.

Stellar Performances and Creative Direction
The script, compiled and adapted by Sudesh Sethi and Dr. Jayshree Sethi, was brought to life by the director Shamir himself, who portrayed Sahir, alongside Dr. Jayshree Sethi as Amrita. Their performances struck a chord with the audience, maintaining a delicate balance between restraint and emotional intensity.
Vocals by Shreya Arora and Javed further enriched the production, while backstage contributions by Shweta Mishra and Swati added visual and technical finesse to the staging.
Audience Moved by Emotional Depth
The presentation’s creative flow allowed the audience to journey through different phases of the poets’ lives, maintaining a compelling narrative rhythm. The evocative storytelling and powerful performances ensured that the audience remained engrossed, many visibly moved by the end of the show.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by organiser Zafar Nabi, who expressed gratitude to the artists and guests for making the evening memorable.
‘Woh Afsana’ not only celebrated two iconic literary personalities but also reaffirmed the timeless appeal of a love story that, though incomplete, continues to inspire generations.
