Lucknow Police Arrest Culpable Homicide Accused in Fatal Assault Over Goat Dispute

Lucknow: The Banthra Police of the Lucknow Commissionerate have arrested a man accused of culpable homicide following the death of a 32-year-old villager who was allegedly assaulted during a dispute over a goat.

According to police, the case was registered after Ram Kumar Rawat, a resident of Mawai Padiyana village in Banthra, lodged a complaint stating that his son, Jitendra Kumar (32), had been assaulted following an altercation related to tying a goat. The victim sustained serious injuries during the incident.

Jitendra was initially treated at GSRM Hospital before being shifted to New City Hospital, Lucknow, for advanced medical care. He was later brought home by his family, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Based on the complaint, Banthra Police registered Case No. 0207/2026 under Sections 105 and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation. Acting under the directions of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) and the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Krishna Nagar, a police team arrested the accused, Mahipal Rawat (35), a resident of Mawai Padiyana village, on July 8.

During interrogation, the accused told police that the incident stemmed from an argument on June 27, 2026, when the victim’s motorcycle allegedly collided with a goat being taken for grazing by his nephew, Anish. Anish reportedly objected and asked Jitendra to drive carefully, leading to a heated exchange.

Mahipal claimed that he reached the spot after hearing the commotion and attempted to intervene. However, the argument escalated, and he, along with his nephew, allegedly assaulted Jitendra. In a fit of rage, Mahipal picked up a wooden mango stick lying nearby and struck Jitendra on the head, causing critical injuries that later proved fatal.

The accused has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.

The arrest was made by the Banthra Police team, comprising Sub-Inspector Abhay Kumar Gupta, Constable Ashok Kumar, and Constable Amit Yadav, as part of the investigation into the case.
