Armenia’s Pinaka Order Boosts India’s Defence Export Ambitions, Highlights Private Sector Strength

New Delhi: India has taken another significant step towards establishing itself as a major global defence exporter with the supply of 1,000 guided Pinaka rockets to Armenia. The export marks an important milestone in India’s defence manufacturing journey, demonstrating its growing ability to deliver advanced military equipment through domestic industrial capabilities.

The rockets were dispatched earlier this year from the manufacturing facility of Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL) in Nagpur. The development also highlights the expanding role of India’s private defence industry in fulfilling international military requirements.

Private Sector Strengthens Defence Manufacturing

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system has evolved into an advanced artillery platform through continuous technological improvements and collaboration with private manufacturers.

Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited, part of the Nagpur-based Solar Group, is playing a key role in manufacturing ammunition for the Armenian order. Its involvement demonstrates the growing capacity of Indian private companies to produce sophisticated defence equipment and meet demanding international delivery requirements.

The achievement also reflects the changing character of the Make in India initiative, which is increasingly focused not only on domestic self-reliance but also on competing in international defence markets.

Complete Artillery Package Adds Strategic Value

The estimated ₹2,000-crore agreement with Armenia is particularly significant because it involves more than the supply of ammunition. The broader arrangement includes Pinaka launchers, multiple batteries and a substantial supply of rockets, providing Armenia with an integrated artillery capability.

Such comprehensive defence agreements can establish long-term partnerships between supplier and buyer. Advanced weapon systems require regular ammunition replenishment, spare parts, maintenance support and technological upgrades throughout their operational life.

By supplying an integrated Pinaka package, India has an opportunity to build a sustained defence relationship with Armenia, potentially opening avenues for further ammunition orders and technical cooperation.

Expanding India’s Geopolitical Reach

The agreement also carries strategic significance for the South Caucasus region. Armenia’s decision to diversify its defence procurement sources reflects its efforts to strengthen military capabilities while reducing dependence on traditional suppliers.

For India, the successful delivery of the Pinaka system provides an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of its indigenous defence technology to other potential international customers.

With several countries exploring alternatives to established global defence suppliers, Indian systems offering a combination of operational effectiveness, technological sophistication and competitive pricing could attract wider interest.

The Pinaka platform could particularly appeal to prospective buyers in Eurasia, Southeast Asia and Africa seeking modern artillery capabilities and diversified procurement partnerships.

A New Chapter in Defence Exports

The Armenian order represents more than a commercial achievement for India’s defence industry. It highlights the country’s growing technological capabilities, manufacturing capacity and ability to deliver integrated military solutions.

The increasing participation of private companies alongside government research institutions and public sector manufacturers is also reshaping India’s defence production ecosystem.

With companies such as Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited taking on larger international assignments, India is strengthening its position as a competitive supplier of advanced defence equipment.

The Pinaka programme’s international expansion signals a broader transition in India’s defence industry — from meeting domestic requirements to supplying complete, sophisticated military systems to the global market.
