Defence Ministry Signs Rs 425-Crore Deal for Marine Gas Turbine Generators for Indian Navy

New Delhi: In a significant boost to indigenous defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth approximately Rs 425 crore with Bharat Forge Limited, Pune, for the supply of 12 sets of 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) for the Indian Navy.

The procurement has been undertaken under the Buy (Indian) category and includes a minimum indigenous content of 60 percent, reflecting the government’s continued emphasis on self-reliance in defence production.

The agreement was formalized in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and Bharat Forge.

The generators will be used for onboard power generation on the Navy’s Kolkata-class guided missile destroyers, enhancing the operational reliability and efficiency of these frontline warships. The project is expected to be completed over a period of five years.

As part of the programme, Bharat Forge will establish a dedicated facility for the integration, testing, and validation of marine gas turbine generators. The company is also expected to contribute to future design and development initiatives involving larger marine power plants and propulsion gas turbine systems.

Defence officials believe the project will strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in the field of marine propulsion and power-generation technologies while reducing long-term dependence on overseas suppliers.

The initiative is also expected to create a sustainable ecosystem for the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and lifecycle support of gas turbine equipment within the country. Such capabilities will not only support the Indian Navy but could also benefit other branches of the armed forces requiring advanced power-generation systems.

The contract marks another step forward in India’s efforts to expand indigenous defence manufacturing under the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, while enhancing technological self-sufficiency in critical military platforms and equipment.
