Anjana Sukhani Opens Up About Landing ‘Meher’ in Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga, Draws Parallels with ‘Geet’

Mumbai: Actor Anjana Sukhani has shared insights into how she came on board for filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s latest film Main Vaapas Aaunga, where she plays the character Meher—one that is already resonating with audiences.

Speaking about the casting process, Sukhani recalled receiving an unexpected call from the director’s team asking her to send an introduction video. What followed, she said, was a meeting that would define her next on-screen role.

“He wanted to see me on camera,” she shared, adding that when she met Imtiaz Ali at his office, the conversation quickly turned into a narration of the character. “I think he saw Meher in me. After he narrated the role, I had no questions. Who am I to say no to Imtiaz Ali?”

A Character with Shades of ‘Geet’

While reflecting on Meher, Sukhani noted interesting similarities between her role and one of Imtiaz Ali’s most beloved characters—Geet from Jab We Met, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan.

She described Meher as spontaneous, unfiltered, and emotionally expressive—someone who often speaks her mind without hesitation, even in the most inappropriate moments.

“Like Geet, Meher doesn’t have a filter,” she said. “All of Imtiaz’s women have a childlike innocence, even when they are mature. They say the wrong things at the wrong time, but in a very endearing way.”

Working with Veteran Actors

Sukhani also spoke warmly about her experience working with acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah, calling every scene with him a learning experience.

“Every time I did a scene with him, I got emotional just watching him perform. It felt like a masterclass,” she said.

She also praised her co-star Diljit Dosanjh for his professionalism and supportive nature on set.

“Diljit is extremely sincere. He knows everyone’s lines, and whenever I slipped, he would gently help me out,” she added.

A Film Gaining Positive Response

In Main Vaapas Aaunga, Sukhani appears alongside Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari, contributing to what has been described as an emotionally engaging ensemble drama.

The film is receiving strong audience appreciation and positive word-of-mouth, with viewers praising its storytelling and performances for their emotional depth and relatability.

As the film continues to gain traction, Meher’s character—played by Sukhani—has emerged as one of the notable highlights, adding warmth and energy to the narrative.
