Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over the international recognition, describing it as a testament to India’s commitment to protecting wetlands and preserving ecological balance. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister highlighted Surha Tal’s rich biodiversity, particularly its importance as a habitat for numerous migratory and resident bird species. He noted that community participation, scientific interventions, innovation, and public awareness have played a crucial role in strengthening wetland conservation across the country.
The Ramsar certificate for Surha Tal was formally handed over to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath by Forest Minister Arun Kumar Saxena during a World Environment Day programme held at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow.
The event also witnessed the launch of several major environmental initiatives, including India’s first Airshed-Based Uttar Pradesh Clean Air Management Project, supported by the World Bank and valued at ₹2,741 crore. The Chief Minister inaugurated the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation campaign, unveiled the logo and website of UP CAMP, launched the state Wetland Portal, and released a booklet showcasing Uttar Pradesh’s Ramsar sites.

Surha Tal, renowned for its natural ecosystem, aquatic biodiversity, and seasonal influx of migratory birds, has emerged as one of northern India’s most significant wetlands. Environmental experts believe the Ramsar designation will enhance conservation efforts, boost eco-tourism, and provide global recognition to the region’s ecological importance.
During the programme, winners of various environmental competitions were felicitated, while village heads associated with wetland conservation initiatives across the state were also honoured.
The recognition of Surha Tal as India’s 100th Ramsar Site not only elevates Ballia’s profile on the global environmental map but also reinforces Uttar Pradesh’s growing role in biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecological development.
