“Shardul Thakur Never Gets Intimidated by Aggressive Batters”: Irfan Pathan

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians kicked off their TATA IPL campaign in emphatic fashion, chasing down their highest-ever target against Kolkata Knight Riders. The thrilling win sparked detailed analysis from experts on JioHotstar’s ‘Google Search AI Mode Match Centre Live’, where Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh shared key insights.

Pathan lauded Ryan Rickelton for his match-winning knock, highlighting his superior form and versatility compared to Quinton de Kock.
“Rickelton was outstanding. His range, especially on the off-side, stood out. That six over cover was exceptional. His shoulder alignment helps him access those areas consistently and maintain control. Against spin, he showed clear intent from the very first ball, targeting the slog sweep. On a pitch like Mumbai, his batting style is perfectly suited,” Pathan explained.

Speaking about Shardul Thakur, Pathan emphasised the bowler’s fearless mindset and tactical adaptability.
“He’s not a bowler who gets intimidated, even when batters are attacking. He keeps coming at you. What makes him effective is his variation—he’s constantly changing his grip during the run-up, whether for slower balls, cross-seam, or scrambled seam deliveries. He may not have express pace or big swing, but his willingness to experiment with lengths and speeds is why he continues to pick up wickets,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh pointed out a crucial tactical error by KKR during the Powerplay. He believed that Sunil Narine should have been introduced earlier to target Rohit Sharma.

“The best match-up was to use Narine in the Powerplay for at least one or two overs. That was their best opportunity to pick early wickets and build pressure. The fact that he didn’t complete his full quota reflects a lapse in captaincy. Credit to Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton—they batted with authority and never allowed the bowlers to settle—but KKR could have managed that phase much better,” he said.

The match ultimately showcased Mumbai’s batting dominance and exposed tactical gaps in KKR’s approach, particularly during the crucial early overs.
