Lucknow: Police in Lucknow arrested a 22-year-old man accused of mobile snatching following a brief encounter, officials said.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Nipun Agarwal, the incident dates back to March 20 when a mobile phone was snatched from Preeti Singh, a security guard. Acting on her complaint, police swiftly registered a case and formed special teams to trace the accused.
The suspect was spotted near Sector 15 on Nehar Road in the PGI area. When police signalled him to stop, he allegedly opened fire. In retaliatory action, the accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was taken into custody.
Police identified the accused as Arjun Rawat. A stolen mobile phone, a motorcycle, and a .315 bore pistol were recovered from his possession. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to the crime. Officials said Rawat has multiple criminal cases registered against him and has been involved in robbery incidents in the past.
He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, and further investigation is underway.
In a separate case in Agra, three individuals accused of robbing a jeweller were arrested after an encounter. Assistant Commissioner of Police Gaurav Singh said the suspects opened fire on police when intercepted near the Patholi-Bichpuri canal.
The accused—Rohit, Ankit, and Prince—were apprehended after one of them sustained a gunshot injury. Police recovered stolen jewellery, an illegal firearm, and the motorcycle used in the crime. The trio later confessed to their involvement in the March 17 robbery.
Meanwhile, in another recent incident in Lucknow, police arrested a man involved in a chain-snatching case after he allegedly fired at officers during a vehicle check. A firearm and the stolen chain were recovered, and officials confirmed that the accused faces multiple serious charges.
Police said investigations in all cases are ongoing.
