Kolkata: India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir hailed wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson for delivering a crucial performance when the team needed it the most, following India’s thrilling victory over the West Indies cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 clash.
Samson played a remarkable unbeaten innings of 97 runs off just 50 balls, striking 12 fours and four sixes to guide India to a five-wicket win while chasing a challenging total of 196. The victory secured India’s place in the semi-finals, which will be played on March 5 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Earlier, West Indies posted 195 for four in 20 overs after solid partnerships led by captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase. India’s bowling attack was led by veteran pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed two key wickets and played a vital role in restricting the opposition.
Reflecting on Samson’s performance, Gambhir described the innings as “a world-class knock played by a top player on the biggest stage.” He said the team management always believed Samson would rise to the occasion despite a modest outing in the earlier series against New Zealand national cricket team.

Gambhir emphasized that while big innings often make headlines, small contributions from other players are equally vital in securing victories. He pointed out that partnerships involving captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma helped stabilize the chase.
The coach also highlighted India’s tactical use of Bumrah against key opposition batters and praised the team’s balanced approach with both bat and ball. He added that India is fortunate to have talented wicketkeeper-batsmen like Samson and Ishan Kishan available in the squad.
According to Gambhir, the team’s philosophy remains simple: every player must deliver their best whenever they step onto the field for India, as even the smallest contributions can ultimately determine the outcome of a match.
