Neymar Extends Santos Contract Until 2026, Keeps World Cup Comeback Dream Alive

Brasilia: Brazilian football star Neymar has extended his contract with Santos until the end of 2026, the club confirmed on Tuesday, as the 33-year-old forward continues his bid to return to full fitness and push for a place in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Neymar rejoined his boyhood club Santos in January 2025 and played a decisive role in helping them retain their place in Brazil’s top division. The forward found form at a crucial stage of the season, scoring five goals in the final five matches to steer the club away from relegation danger.

“Santos is my place, I’m at home,” Neymar said in a video message shared on the club’s official social media platforms. “It’s with you that I want to achieve the dreams that are still missing,” he added, addressing the fans.

The contract extension comes despite Neymar’s ongoing battle with injuries. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his knee last month and is currently focused on recovery and regaining match fitness.

Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals, Neymar has not represented the national team since 2023. Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti had stated in October that the forward would only be considered for selection once he proves he is fully fit and able to compete at the highest level.

Brazil are set to compete in Group C of the FIFA World Cup, alongside Scotland, Morocco and Haiti. The tournament will be held from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

By committing his future to Santos through 2026, Neymar has signalled his intent to remain competitive at club level while keeping alive his ambition of a World Cup return with the five-time champions.
