Bareilly: In a groundbreaking achievement, Dr. Rohit Kumar and his team at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) have successfully conducted India’s first indigenous hip replacement surgery for dogs. Until now, artificial hips had to be imported at costs exceeding ₹5 lakh. This new cemented implant has been specially designed for Indian breeds, using entirely local technology.
The team worked for three years, collaborating with human orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Alok Singh and Bareilly Medicare’s Yogesh and Devesh Saxena. Gujarat’s Life Ortho Care developed the implant and instruments. The design process involved researchers Dr. T. Sai Kumar and Dr. Kamlesh Kumar under the AINP-DIMSCA project, guided by Dr. Rohit, Dr. Amarpal, Dr. A.C. Saxena, and Dr. A.M. Pawde.
Three successful surgeries—in Dehradun, Bareilly, and Sambhal—have already given dogs a new lease on life. Director Dr. Triveni Dutt congratulated the team and urged speedy industry transfer to benefit dog owners nationwide affordably.
