Viviana Singh Opens Up About Playing Gandhari in Sony SAB’s ‘Hastinapur Ke Veer’

Mumbai: Sony SAB is gearing up to launch its upcoming mythological drama Hastinapur Ke Veer, which explores the formative years of the Pandavas and Kauravas and the emotional journeys that shaped the destiny of Hastinapur. The show is scheduled to premiere on June 2 at 9 PM.

Bringing emotional depth and quiet resilience to the series is actor Viviana Singh, who essays the iconic role of Gandhari. Known in mythology for her sacrifice, devotion and inner strength, Gandhari remains one of the most emotionally layered characters in the Mahabharata narrative.

Speaking about the experience of portraying Gandhari, Viviana Singh described the role as both emotionally intense and physically demanding, particularly because of Gandhari’s symbolic blindfold, which she wears throughout her life as a mark of solidarity and commitment.

The actor shared that performing scenes while blindfolded required her to completely rethink her approach to acting. Since performers naturally depend on eye contact and visual expressions to convey emotions, she had to rely more heavily on body language, pauses, voice modulation and stillness to bring authenticity to the character.

Viviana explained that she spent considerable time preparing for the role by practicing movement, reactions and performances with her eyes covered to better understand how a person without sight experiences space, emotions and relationships. Over time, she developed a more instinctive and restrained style of expression suited to Gandhari’s personality.

She added that portraying the emotional depth and silent strength of Gandhari has been one of the most transformative experiences of her acting career and described the journey as both challenging and deeply rewarding.

With its focus on relationships, emotions and untold moments from the early lives of the Kauravas and Pandavas, Hastinapur Ke Veer aims to present a fresh perspective on the legendary epic for television audiences.
