UP Government Signs MoU with I-Forest to Tackle Pollution

Lucknow: In a significant step towards environmental sustainability and addressing the challenges of climate change, the Directorate of Environment under the Uttar Pradesh Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology (I-Forest). The partnership aims to promote sustainable development and devise solutions to tackle pollution across the state.

The MoU was signed on Thursday at the office of the Directorate of Environment in the presence of Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Arun Kumar Saxena, Minister of State K.P. Malik, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, and other senior officials.

Focus on Air Pollution, Waste Management, and Climate Change

The three-year MoU will focus on addressing key environmental challenges such as air pollution control, waste management, and climate change mitigation. It will also encourage the adoption of green energy and promote sustainable development in industries and urban areas of Uttar Pradesh. Under this partnership, I-Forest will conduct research-driven studies and training programs, while also assisting the Directorate in the implementation of government schemes. Notably, the collaboration will also engage religious institutions in environmental protection activities.

The partnership had its inception during the Mahakumbh 2025, where both parties jointly organized the first-ever “Faith of Kumbh and Climate Change” conference, underscoring the link between religious practices and environmental responsibility.

Exploring New Technologies and Solutions

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Dr. Arun Kumar Saxena, Minister for Environment and Forests, said, “Uttar Pradesh faces unique and complex environmental challenges. Our government has taken the lead in improving air quality, controlling industrial emissions, and promoting clean energy. Through this partnership, we aim to explore innovative technologies and solutions to effectively combat pollution and climate change.”

Science-Based Solutions to Environmental Problems

Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh emphasized the importance of science and research-based approaches, stating, “Advanced research and knowledge development are essential to solve environmental problems. This MoU between the Directorate and I-Forest will play a key role in providing evidence-based solutions to challenges like air pollution, waste management, and river pollution.”

Strengthening Climate Policies

Principal Secretary Anil Kumar added, “This collaboration will aid in managing air pollution, promoting green industries, preparing cities to face climate challenges like heatwaves, and strengthening climate policies. I-Forest will provide technical expertise, execute pilot projects, train stakeholders, and support research to improve environmental management.”

Dr. Chandra Bhushan, CEO of I-Forest, presented the strategic framework of this partnership and outlined the organization’s plans to support sustainable development initiatives in the state.
