UP Accelerates EV Infrastructure Push, 238 Charging Locations Approved Across 11 Cities

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is stepping up efforts to expand its public electric vehicle charging network, with 238 locations across 20 clusters approved under the Prime Minister E-Drive scheme. Of these, agreements for 99 locations have already been completed, while the process for the remaining 139 sites is pending.

The charging infrastructure is being developed through the Uttar Pradesh Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), with the objective of making EV charging more accessible across major urban, industrial and transport centres.

Among the approved locations, Gautam Buddh Nagar has 39 sites, Lucknow 36, Meerut 35, Gorakhpur 32 and Varanasi 28. The plan also includes 21 locations in Agra, 14 in Mathura, 13 in Prayagraj, 12 in Kanpur, six in Ghaziabad and two in Kanpur Dehat.

The state has set a larger target of developing 1,500 charging locations in the second phase of the programme. Around 240 sites have already been identified, leaving 1,260 locations to be finalised.

The second phase will cover locations associated with municipal corporations, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, transport authorities, power distribution companies, industrial development bodies, tourism facilities, healthcare and educational institutions, sugarcane institutes and agricultural market committees.

Within municipal corporation areas, 129 locations have been identified. These include sites in Aligarh, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Firozabad, Jhansi, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Shahjahanpur, Agra, Kanpur, Meerut and Kanpur Dehat. Another 74 locations have been identified for UPSRTC facilities, while 10 are linked to the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority and 26 to electricity distribution companies.

The proposed charging network will also extend to medical colleges, district hospitals, industrial parks, universities, government offices, development authorities, mandis, bus stations and other public facilities. The planned stations are expected to include two 60-kW DC chargers and one 12-kW AC/DC charger.

State authorities have directed district administrations to identify suitable public locations, including major offices, bus terminals, industrial areas, educational institutions, malls, roadside facilities and parking areas, and submit proposals for developing charging infrastructure.

The expansion is aimed at creating a wider and more dependable charging network as electric vehicle adoption grows in Uttar Pradesh. Improved availability of charging points is expected to support EV users, public transport operators and commercial fleets while strengthening the state’s transition towards cleaner mobility.
