Mumbai: Gulshan Kumar and T-Series are bringing Assi, presented by Banaras Media Works, to television with its World Television Premiere on &pictures this Friday, September 25, at 9:30 pm. Directed by Anubhav Sinha and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Sinha, the film is an investigative courtroom drama that explores questions surrounding justice, society and the treatment of victims within the legal system.
Taapsee Pannu stars as advocate Ravi Huskar, who takes up a challenging case that forces her and those around her in the courtroom to confront difficult questions about how the justice system responds when a victim seeks justice. Kani Kusruti plays Parima, with Revathi, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Naseeruddin Shah in key roles.
Written by Anubhav Sinha and Gaurav Solanki, Assi marks the third collaboration between Sinha and Pannu after Mulk and Thappad. Following its theatrical release earlier this year, the film was noted for addressing a difficult subject without relying on excessive sentimentality or melodrama.
Pannu said the film was never intended to be conventional entertainment, but rather a story that would make audiences uncomfortable and encourage them to reflect and discuss the issues it raises. She said she wanted the film to reach viewers in their homes through television.
Sinha said the question at the heart of Assi had remained with him and that making the film was his way of bringing that concern to the screen. He added that television could help the film reach viewers across different age groups and sections of society.
With its television premiere, Assi will be available to a wider audience, including viewers who may have missed its theatrical release.
