Bareilly: The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is encouraging the adoption of rooftop solar energy in Bareilly, helping households reduce electricity expenses while promoting clean and sustainable power. The scheme aims to provide eligible households with up to 300 units of free electricity per month through solar power.
Mohit Yadav, a resident of Harunagla in Bareilly, is among the beneficiaries who have installed an on-grid rooftop solar system under the scheme. According to the district administration, solar power now meets most of his household’s daily electricity requirements, bringing his monthly bill down to almost the minimum meter charges.

The scheme provides central government subsidies along with assistance from the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). Subsidies are transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), following installation and the completion of the required technical formalities.
Under the net-metering system, surplus electricity generated during the day is exported to the grid, while households draw power when solar generation is insufficient. Imported and exported electricity is adjusted during billing.

The district administration is conducting awareness camps in urban and rural areas to explain registration, installation procedures and vendor selection. Eligible consumers can apply through the National Solar Portal and choose registered vendors for installation.
The administration is also facilitating access to collateral-free loans through banks for eligible applicants requiring financial assistance.
With rooftop solar systems designed for long-term use, the initiative is expected to reduce household expenditure and dependence on conventional electricity. It also supports lower carbon emissions and wider adoption of renewable energy, contributing to Bareilly’s transition towards a cleaner and more energy-independent future.
