PM Matru Vandana Yojana Boosts Maternal Healthcare and Women’s Empowerment in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is being implemented in Uttar Pradesh to improve the health and nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women while reducing the financial challenges associated with motherhood.

Launched in 2017, the scheme provides financial assistance to eligible women to encourage pregnancy registration, antenatal health check-ups, safe childbirth and timely immunisation of newborns. Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, its implementation in Uttar Pradesh has been transferred from the Health Department to the Department of Women and Child Development and Nutrition to improve the delivery of services for women and children.

Under the scheme, eligible women receive ₹5,000 in two instalments for their first child. The first instalment of ₹3,000 is provided after pregnancy registration and at least one prescribed antenatal check-up. The second instalment of ₹2,000 is released after the child’s birth is registered and the prescribed immunisation is completed up to 14 weeks of age.

In the case of a second child, if the child is a girl, an eligible beneficiary receives a one-time payment of ₹6,000. The assistance is intended to encourage women to prioritise their health and nutrition, as well as the early care of their children.

The scheme covers women belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, persons with disabilities, BPL and National Food Security Act ration card holders, beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, e-Shram card holders, women farmers receiving benefits under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi and MGNREGA job card holders. Women falling within the prescribed family income limit and other categories notified by the Central Government are also eligible.

Beneficiaries must meet the prescribed age criteria at the time of childbirth and complete registration on the scheme’s portal within 270 days of the child’s birth.

Financial assistance is transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Face capture is required as part of the payment process, while bank accounts must be linked with Aadhaar and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The digital payment mechanism is intended to ensure transparency and eliminate intermediaries.

Uttar Pradesh has reported progress in the scheme’s implementation during the financial year 2026-27. Against an annual enrolment target of 11,92,700 beneficiaries, the state had registered 5,37,018 women by September 10, 2026, exceeding the interim target of 5,24,291. This represents an achievement of 102.43 per cent against the target set for the period.

During the financial year, ₹133.60 crore has been transferred to 4,15,846 beneficiaries.

The scheme aims to strengthen maternal and child healthcare by combining financial support with incentives for pregnancy registration, antenatal check-ups and timely childhood immunisation. The enrolment figures and DBT payments reflect the state’s efforts to extend maternity-related financial assistance and social security to eligible women.
