Lucknow: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have suffered a significant setback ahead of the IPL 2025 season as their star pacer, Mayank Yadav, has been ruled out of the tournament’s first phase. According to reports, Mayank is currently recovering from a lumbar stress injury (lower back injury) and has resumed bowling practice at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The young speedster sustained the injury after India’s T20 series against Bangladesh in October last year and has been undergoing rehabilitation ever since.
Possible Return in Second Phase of IPL 2025
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet set a definite date for Mayank’s return. However, if he successfully clears all fitness parameters and gradually increases his bowling workload, he could be available for the second phase of IPL 2025. His absence is a big blow for LSG, who retained him for a whopping INR 11 crore ahead of the auction. This marked a significant financial jump for Mayank, who was initially acquired for just INR 20 lakh as an uncapped fast bowler in IPL 2024.
Mayank Yadav’s Speed and Performance
One of the key reasons behind Mayank’s high valuation is his ability to bowl consistently at speeds of over 150 kmph. His express pace helped him win back-to-back Player of the Match awards in his first two IPL appearances. Recognizing his potential, national selectors included him in India’s exclusive pool of fast bowlers for future international assignments.
Injury-Plagued IPL 2024 Campaign
Mayank’s previous IPL season was also marred by injuries, limiting him to just four matches. A side strain forced him to miss the final two games, and his rehabilitation was further delayed due to another injury setback. Although he made a brief return for India’s T20 series against Bangladesh, he suffered another injury, forcing him back into rehab. While the BCCI has not officially disclosed the exact nature of his current injury, it is understood to be a stress injury in the lower left section of his back.
LSG to Begin IPL 2025 Campaign on March 24
Lucknow Super Giants will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign on March 24 against Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam. The Delhi franchise will be led by Rishabh Pant, who is also making a long-awaited comeback after a prolonged injury layoff. With Mayank’s absence, LSG will have to reshuffle their bowling attack as they aim for a strong start to the season.
