Lucknow: A study team from the Directorate of Municipal Administration, Government of Maharashtra, studied Lucknow’s sewerage and sewage treatment system. The team included Prashant Bhamre, Chief Engineer (Konkan Division) of the Maharashtra Water Supply and Sewerage Board (MJP), and Maruti Gaikwad, Chief Officer of the Kulgaon-Badlapur Municipal Council.

The team visited the 345 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) located at Bharwara. Rajesh Mathpal, Project Director at Suez, provided the team with detailed information regarding the STP’s operations. He explained that the sewage first passes through screening and grit chambers, where solid waste and heavy materials are separated. Subsequently, the sewage undergoes biological treatment in a UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor. After passing through stages such as pre-aeration, a polishing pond, and a chlorine contact chamber, the treated water is discharged in compliance with prescribed standards. The Bharwara STP has a design capacity of 345 MLD and operates based on UASB technology.

The study team gained insights into various aspects of sewerage management, STP operations, and urban sewage treatment in Lucknow, and gathered information about this model.
