Prayagraj: Prayagraj, once known for its narrow and dilapidated roads, has undergone a remarkable transformation. With Maha Kumbh 2025 approaching, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has expanded on the developmental works initiated for Kumbh 2019, focusing on permanent infrastructure improvements. As the largest congregation of Sanatan Dharma devotees, Maha Kumbh has spurred large-scale infrastructure upgrades to ensure seamless travel for the millions of pilgrims expected to visit.
Among the key developments, 200 roads have been constructed or upgraded, adorned with three lakh plants and one lakh horticultural saplings. This beautification ensures that pilgrims leave with cherished memories of the city’s aesthetic charm and functional infrastructure.
Role of Three Key Departments
The development of 200 roads has been a collaborative effort between three departments: Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department (PWD), and Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA).
- The Municipal Corporation played the most significant role, handling the construction, widening, and strengthening of 78 roads.
- The PWD contributed by upgrading 74 roads.
- The PDA developed 48 roads, focusing on beautification alongside infrastructure improvements.
As part of the beautification, over three lakh plants and one lakh horticultural samples have been planted, enhancing the visual appeal and creating a green corridor leading to the Sangam area.
Overcoming Challenges
The road development process was not without its challenges. Encroachments, legal disputes, and logistical hurdles required meticulous planning and execution:
- Encroachments: A total of 4,426 encroachments were removed to clear the way for road construction.
- Legal Disputes: Authorities resolved 82 court cases related to the construction process.
- Utility Relocation: The project involved shifting 4,893 electric poles and installing 170 kilometers of underground cabling to streamline the city’s infrastructure.
