Lucknow: On January 18, 2025, the cricket team from Lucknow University departed for its maiden international tournament, marking a historic moment for the university. The team is set to participate in the T20 Jay Nepal Cup, which will be held from January 20 to January 28, 2025, in Kathmandu, Nepal, organized by Tribhuvan University.
The tournament will feature cricket teams from various universities across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates.
Prior to their departure, the General Secretary of the Sports Council, Prof. Ajay Kumar Arya, welcomed the team at the Paranjpe Pavilion Ground and motivated the players. The Vice-Chancellor, Alok Kumar Rai, also extended his best wishes to the players for the upcoming tournament.
Prof. Ajay Kumar Arya shared that this marks the first time in the history of Lucknow University that a team will participate in an international tournament. He credited the success of this achievement to the able leadership and guidance of the Honorable Vice-Chancellor.
The team was sent off with great enthusiasm, with a large gathering of students and faculty members present. Among them were the Chairman of the Sports Council, Dr. R.B. Singh, Cricket President Dr. S.A. Alvi, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Manuka Khanna, Prof. Rakesh Dwivedi, and others.
The 17-member cricket team will be accompanied by Head Coach Obaid Kamal, Assistant Coach Shoaib Kamal, and Manager Dr. Arun Kumar. The team is led by Captain Anand Sagar. Before their departure, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor presented the team with the Indian flag and the Lucknow University Sports Council flag.
Prof. Rakesh Dwivedi, the Marshal of the Sports Council, also presented the Lucknow University Sports Council cap to Vice-Chancellor Alok Kumar Rai as a gesture of respect and admiration.
Lucknow University’s first match is scheduled against Delhi University on January 23, 2025. The final match of the tournament will take place on January 28, 2025, at the main ground of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The selection of players for the team was carried out by international cricketers Gyanendra Pandey, Mohammad Ubaid Kamal, Javed, Arun Kumar, and Asif.
