“Bed of Arrows” by Kush Bhargava offers a unique retelling of the Mahabharata through the perspective of Bhishma, one of its most enigmatic and tragic characters. The novel delves into the inner turmoil of Bhishma, who spends 58 nights on a bed of arrows reflecting on his life choices, his vow of celibacy, and the consequences of his decisions on the fate of Hastinapura.
The narrative explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and the complex interplay between dharma (duty) and desire. Bhishma’s vow to protect the throne, which led him to relinquish his own rights, paradoxically instigates a chain of events that drives the kingdom to the brink of destruction. As he lies wounded on the battlefield, Bhishma contemplates his legacy, questioning whether he will be remembered for his heroic past or condemned for his passive role during the war between the Kauravas and Pandavas.
Kush Bhargava, the author, comes from a distinguished family background linked to the historic Newal Kishore Press in Lucknow. Apart from his literary pursuits, Bhargava has been actively involved in politics and sports administration, contributing to various social causes and the media. This is his second novel after his debut work “Dance of Destiny,” which was also well-received.
The book offers readers an introspective look into the psyche of one of the Mahabharata’s pivotal figures, bringing a modern sensibility to ancient lore. It invites readers to ponder the timeless struggle between adhering to duty and following one’s desires, a theme that resonates deeply in both ancient and contemporary contexts.
The book has been published by Rupa Publications where the book is listed.
