Lucknow: District Magistrate of Lucknow, Vishak G. Iyer, conducted an on-field inspection of night shelters located at Laxman Mela Ground, Jiamau, and Parivartan Chowk to review the arrangements made for the homeless during the winter season. The inspection aimed to ensure that all facilities were functioning properly and that no individual had to endure the cold outdoors.
During the visit, DM Vishak G. Iyer interacted with the shelter residents to understand their experiences and gather feedback about the facilities. He observed that all shelters were well-maintained and clean. He emphasized that no lapses in the arrangements would be tolerated and instructed the shelter operators to actively identify and bring homeless individuals from the streets to the night shelters.
The District Magistrate directed zonal officers to ensure that no one is sleeping on the streets in their respective areas. He mandated that zonal vehicles and e-rickshaws should patrol the city from evening until night, identifying and relocating individuals to nearby shelters.
Key Directives Issued by the District Magistrate:
- Jiamau Shelter:
- The caretaker informed that around 40 homeless individuals are currently staying in this shelter, which has separate accommodations for men and women across two blocks.
- Cleanliness was found to be adequate, and residents confirmed receiving meals at night.
- Laxman Mela Ground and Parivartan Chowk Temporary Shelters:
- Both shelters were found to have sufficient cleanliness and functional arrangements for bonfires to keep residents warm.
- The DM interacted with the residents to understand their needs and reviewed the overall setup.
The DM also advised that if there is a shortage of blankets in any shelter, the respective Assistant Municipal Magistrates should be contacted immediately to replenish the stock.
Senior officials, including the Additional District Magistrate (Finance/Revenue) and Assistant Municipal Magistrates, accompanied the District Magistrate during the inspection.
This initiative highlights the administration’s proactive measures to ensure the safety and comfort of the city’s homeless population during the harsh winter season.
