India Ready for European Challenge in FIH Men’s Pro League

New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team, led by star drag-flicker and captain Harmanpreet Singh, departed for Europe to begin its campaign in the European leg of the FIH Men’s Pro League 2025-26. The 24-member squad left from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport and is scheduled to arrive in Rotterdam on June 10 ahead of a crucial series of matches against some of the world’s top hockey nations.

India will play the first phase of the European leg in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from June 14 to 21, before moving to London, England, for the second phase from June 23 to 28. During the tour, India will face Germany, the Netherlands, England, and Pakistan twice each in what promises to be a demanding and high-intensity campaign.

The upcoming matches are expected to play a key role in India’s preparations for two major international tournaments later this year—the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, scheduled to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands in August, and the Asian Games in Japan in September.

Harmanpreet Confident Ahead of Tough European Leg

Speaking before the team’s departure, captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed confidence in the squad’s preparations and readiness for the challenge ahead.

“We are fully prepared for the European leg of the FIH Men’s Pro League. I have complete faith in this team. Playing against some of the world’s best teams in their home conditions is always a major test, but it is also a valuable opportunity to assess ourselves and continue improving as a unit,” Harmanpreet said.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and playing fearless hockey against elite opposition.

“Our objective is to remain disciplined in crucial moments, execute our plans effectively, and continue building momentum as a team. These matches will help us evaluate where we stand against top-ranked sides while giving us the opportunity to strengthen our combinations and gain valuable experience. We have had a productive training camp in Bengaluru and are eager to put that preparation into practice,” he added.

Coach Fulton Sees Pro League as World Cup Benchmark

India’s Chief Coach Craig Fulton highlighted the significance of the European tour, describing it as an important benchmark ahead of the World Cup.

“These are exactly the kind of matches we need before the World Cup. Facing strong teams like the Netherlands, Germany, England, and Pakistan will help us understand where we stand and what areas require further improvement. Our focus is on meeting the challenges of the Pro League and making the most of every opportunity to grow as a team,” Fulton said.

Key Opportunity for Ranking Points and Momentum

The European leg is crucial not only for India’s standing in the FIH Pro League table but also for building confidence and momentum ahead of a packed international calendar. Competing against four quality opponents over eight matches will provide the team with a comprehensive assessment of its strengths and weaknesses.

The Indian squad features a blend of experienced campaigners and promising young talent, with Harmanpreet Singh leading a strong defensive unit supported by Amit Rohidas, Sumit, Sanjay, Yashdeep Siwach, Amandeep Lakra, Jarmanpreet Singh, and Jugraj Singh.

The midfield will be anchored by experienced stars Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Nilakanta Sharma, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Rajinder Singh, while the forward line includes Mandeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Abhishek, Dilpreet Singh, Selvam Karthi, Shilanand Lakra, and Aditya Arjun Lalge.

Goalkeeping responsibilities will be shared by Mohit Honnenahalli Shashikumar and Suraj Karkera.
