“Rohit Sharma Has Arrived in His 2.0 Avatar; This Version Will Worry All IPL Teams”: Anil Kumble

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians snapped a 13-season jinx in emphatic fashion, registering a clinical six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026 season.

Speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’, former India captain Anil Kumble heaped praise on Rohit Sharma, calling his performance a sign of a renewed and dangerous phase in his career.

“Rohit Sharma seems to have arrived in his 2.0 avatar. The way he struck the ball all around the ground reminded me of his prime. It’s never easy to dominate bowlers like Varun Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Blessing Muzarabani, but he made it look effortless,” Kumble said.

He also highlighted Rohit’s improved fitness and rhythm, noting that his aggressive intent from the very first ball at venues like Wankhede Stadium reflects his readiness to dominate once again. “This knock shows Rohit means business, and this version of him will worry all IPL teams,” he added.

Kumble also pointed out tactical flaws in KKR’s approach, particularly their overdependence on spin duo Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy. He questioned skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s decision not to introduce Narine during the Powerplay when Rohit and Ryan Rickelton were attacking.

“By the time Narine came on, the damage was already done. When you have two world-class spinners, you need to use them better. KKR’s fast-bowling unit looks inexperienced, so the responsibility on Narine and Varun becomes even greater,” he observed.

Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene expressed relief at finally ending the long-standing streak of opening-match defeats.

“Not winning the first game since 2012 was always discussed in the dressing room. We came close many times but couldn’t cross the line. Chasing 220 made me nervous, but the pitch was good and Rohit–Rickelton’s fearless batting ensured a smooth finish. I’m delighted we broke that streak,” he said.

Meanwhile, former England captain Kevin Pietersen praised MI’s batting depth but cautioned against complacency.

“It’s a strong line-up—almost like a World XI—but conceding 220 is a concern. Their aggressive batting won’t click every time. Other teams will analyse them closely, so Mumbai must adapt, plan smartly, and stay ahead if they want to lift a sixth title,” Pietersen noted.

The victory not only marked a historic start for Mumbai but also signalled a strong warning to the rest of the league, with Rohit Sharma leading the charge in dominant fashion.
