Raebareli — In a remarkable surgical achievement, the Department of ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Raebareli successfully removed two rare tumours that had simultaneously developed from the parotid gland and the parapharyngeal space in a 38-year-old patient.
The patient had been suffering from persistent swelling in the left parotid gland and sought treatment at AIIMS Raebareli. Following detailed clinical evaluation and diagnostic investigations, the condition was identified as a schwannoma. However, the case presented an added surgical challenge when doctors discovered two distinct tumours—one located in the deep lobe of the parotid gland and another in the parapharyngeal space.
The complex three-hour surgery was led by Associate Professor Dr. Arijit Jotdar from the ENT Department, along with Dr. Dhruv Kapoor, Dr. Mayur, Dr. Aastha, Dr. Srishti, and Dr. Prabhat. The anaesthesia team was headed by Dr. Kalicharan Das, supported by Dr. Krishna and Dr. Ashwathi.
The surgical team successfully removed both tumours while meticulously preserving all branches of the facial nerve and safeguarding the carotid artery. Notably, the patient did not experience any facial weakness following the procedure.

Head of the ENT Department, Dr. Ananya Soni, and Associate Professor Dr. Arijit Jotdar explained that such tumours of the parotid gland are extremely rare and typically arise from the facial nerve. Surgical removal carries a significant risk of facial paralysis, as the tumour must be carefully separated from the nerve. Furthermore, operating in the parapharyngeal space is particularly challenging due to its proximity to critical structures such as the facial nerve and carotid artery. They emphasized that the simultaneous occurrence of two such tumours is exceptionally uncommon.
The use of intraoperative nerve monitoring technology proved instrumental in ensuring precise tumour removal while maintaining nerve integrity.
Under the guidance and leadership of Executive Director Professor Amita Jain, AIIMS Raebareli continues to advance medical innovation and deliver comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services. The institute’s commitment to high-quality patient care is reflected in its advanced infrastructure and highly skilled medical and surgical teams.
