D Gukesh youngest on top of the world

D Gukesh

Singapore: Gukesh made history as the youngest Chess World Champion, defeating Ding Liren in the 14th round of their World Championship clash in Singapore.

At just 18, Gukesh surpassed Garry Kasparov’s record, who was 22 when he won in 1985. Gukesh also became the youngest-ever winner of the FIDE Candidates tournament in April, qualifying for the World Championship final, and is only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to do so.

His journey started at age seven, quickly becoming a FIDE-rated player. He won the U-9 Asian Schools Championship in 2015 and went on to achieve titles like U-12 World Youth Champion and International Master. By 2019, he became the second-youngest Grandmaster.

In 2022, Gukesh led India to a bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad, and by 2023, he surpassed Viswanathan Anand to become India’s top-ranked player. His victory marks a historic achievement in Indian chess.
