Silchar: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee again said that if the opposition alliance comes to power at the Centre, it will scrap the National Register of Citizens (NRC) from Assam, besides repealing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
“The BJP has tortured people in the name of CAA and NRC,” Banerjee said at a rally in Assam’s Silchar in support of Trinamool Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate, Radheshyam Biswas. The entire country saw chaos in Delhi, Guwahati, Silchar etc. They (BJP) have committed many atrocities on the common people. If we come to power, we will abolish CAA and NRC.”
Assam is the only state in the country where the NRC, first compiled in 1951, was updated in August 2019 on the orders of the Supreme Court.
Addressing the rally, the Bengal Chief Minister also claimed that democracy is facing “threat” under the BJP rule, and if PM Narendra Modi comes to power for a third term, he will destroy everyone in the country. Will replace existing systems.
“If Narendra Modi becomes Prime Minister for the third time, he will end elections from the country,” the Chief Minister claimed.
Banerjee also said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not be implemented if the opposition camp forms the government at the Centre.
He further alleged that both CPI-M and Congress are playing into the hands of BJP in Bengal and that is why Trinamool Congress decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections alone.
He also said that if India Bloc government is formed in Delhi, Trinamool will remain at the centre.
Trinamool is contesting on four seats in Assam – Silchar, Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar and Barpeta.
