Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has registered an impressive performance in the Swachhata Hi Seva-2026 campaign, maintaining its leading position at the national level for the third consecutive year. The campaign, monitored and guided by Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma, has evolved into a broad-based public movement across the state.
The achievement has been attributed to the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, along with active participation by urban local bodies, elected representatives and citizens.

Around 47 lakh citizens, Swachh Vataavaran Protsahan Samitis, Swachh Sarathi Clubs and self-help groups participated in various activities during the campaign. At the beginning, nearly 12 lakh citizens, including mayors, councillors and public representatives, participated in cleanliness drives through voluntary labour.
Of the 1.24 lakh identified Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs), 1.18 lakh waste-sensitive locations were transformed through the direct participation of 17.48 lakh citizens. Intensive cleanliness and beautification drives were also conducted at 25,000 public places, 6,788 markets, 19,741 neighbourhoods, 9,440 public toilets and 6,769 office premises.
Children and youth were given special attention under the campaign. Nearly 28,000 programmes were organised under the ‘Swachh Pathshala’ initiative. Around 2.51 lakh children associated with 4,112 Swachh Sarathi Clubs participated in cleanliness activities, while 8,358 awareness and competitive programmes were conducted.
The welfare, health and safety of sanitation workers remained another key focus. As many as 4,274 Safai Mitra safety and welfare camps were organised, with 1.10 lakh sanitation workers participating. Health check-ups were conducted for 1.01 lakh workers, while more than 70,000 were provided PPE kits. Around 40,000 sanitation workers were honoured for their contribution, and 2.39 lakh workers and their families were connected with various government welfare schemes.

More than 45 lakh households were brought into the campaign to promote source segregation of wet and dry waste. Under ‘Swachhata Se Samriddhi’, 3,834 programmes promoted the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. On World Tourism Day, 26,645 special cleanliness activities were organised, drawing participation from more than 1.33 lakh citizens.
Congratulating the people of Uttar Pradesh, elected representatives, urban local bodies, officials, employees and sanitation workers, Sharma said cleanliness had been transformed into a nationwide public movement under Modi’s leadership.
He said Uttar Pradesh was advancing the cleanliness mission with commitment under the guidance of Yogi Adityanath. A clean, beautiful and healthy Uttar Pradesh remains among the government’s top priorities, he added, stressing that Swachhata Hi Seva was not merely a campaign but a continuing people’s movement.
Sharma said the state would build on its achievements by further strengthening cleanliness, public participation and civic amenities across urban local bodies.
