Lucknow: Since its inception, UPMRC Metro has consistently championed environmental sustainability and the promotion of greenery.
•UPMRC’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy is evident in its extensive solar installations. Lucknow and Kanpur Metro together boasts a total solar capacity of 4.412 MW. While in lucknow, the Transport Nagar Metro Depot alone houses a 2.28 MW solar plant, five metro stations collectively host another 1 MW. Additional installations include 10 KW plants each at RSS buildings in Transport Nagar and Munshipulia, and a 12 KW plant at the Administrative Building in Gomtinagar. Annually, these solar plants have generated an impressive 40 lakh units of energy. Another 1MW solar plant is installed at Kanpur Metro Depot.
• UP Metro is the 1st organization in the state to participate in the Energy Exchange program which has led to saving of electricity worth Rs 3.5 crore in the last 1.5 years.Electricity is procured for Lucknow Metro’s Operation & Maintenance through Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) under ‘open access model’. The rates are decided by the exchange for 24 hours divided into 15-15 mins blocks. Accordingly, UPMRC procures electricity for the time blocks for which the desired rates are being offered. And, for the remaining time blocks, the supply is managed through the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) on the standard rates. Through this model, UPMRC has saved up to a maximum of energy worth Rs 45 lakhs in a month.
•This unwavering dedication has translated into remarkable achievements, including the creation of a sprawling 1.1 lakh square meters of green belt. Leading this green revolution, Lucknow Metro boasts 65,000 square meters of lush greenery, followed by Kanpur Metro with 35,000 square meters, and Agra Metro contributing approximately 1,200 square meters. Key locations such as Polytechnic Chauraha, Metro Depot, Metro Officer’s Colony KD Singh Stadium and the medians along the entire metro corridor now enjoy enhanced urban landscapes thanks to these green covers.
•Another milestone of UP Metro’s environmental strategy is its impressive rainwater conservation efforts. Each year, Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra Metro collectively conserve about 35 lakh litres of rainwater annually, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable water management practices. Water conservation measures also include washing of metro trains with recycled water which is further used in horticulture. This reuse of water further underscores UPMRC’s dedication to sustainable resource utilization, ensuring that every drop of water is maximized for its potential.
• Additionally, the zero discharge facility at Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra Metro depots ensures that no pollutants escape into the environment , with waste being responsibly disposed off. This facility, complemented by automatic composting systems that convert waste into fertilizer, exemplifies UP Metro’s innovative approach to waste management.
