Three-Decade Wait Ends as Yogi Lays Foundation for Ganga Bridge in Bhadohi

Bhadohi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a major infrastructure boost for Bhadohi with the foundation stone laid for a new permanent bridge across the Ganga at the Sitamarhi-Dhantulsi-Dengurpur Ghat. The bridge, estimated to cost more than ₹300 crore, will stretch 1.32 kilometres and is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Bhadohi and the Manda region of Prayagraj.

The project fulfils a demand that residents of the Konia region have pursued for more than three decades. At present, people depend on boats and seasonal pontoon bridges to cross the river. During the monsoon, rising water levels often disrupt this connectivity, forcing residents to take longer routes to reach schools, hospitals, markets and workplaces.

The new bridge, along with approach roads and protective infrastructure, is expected to provide all-weather connectivity. Residents of Bhadohi, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Varanasi and Jaunpur are likely to benefit from improved road links, while movement towards Madhya Pradesh through Mirzapur could also become easier.

The project is particularly significant for Bhadohi’s carpet industry. Better connectivity with Prayagraj could reduce transportation time and improve access to wider markets for manufacturers, exporters and traders. Local businesses are also expected to benefit from increased movement of goods and people.

The bridge could give a further boost to religious tourism around Sitamarhi, an important pilgrimage destination on the Ganga. Easier access from the Prayagraj side is expected to benefit visitors as well as local shops, transport operators and hospitality businesses.

During his visit, the Chief Minister also inaugurated or laid the foundation stones for 112 development projects with a combined value exceeding ₹1,340 crore.

Another significant announcement concerned the district’s identity. Yogi Adityanath reiterated that Bhadohi would be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi, bringing together the name associated with Sant Ravidas and the district’s historic Bhadohi identity.

Bhadohi was created as a separate district in 1994 after being carved out of Varanasi. Its name was changed to Sant Ravidas Nagar in 1997 and later restored to Bhadohi in 2014. The latest formulation seeks to retain both associations.

The developments mark a significant moment for the district, combining a long-awaited connectivity project with an attempt to reflect its social, cultural and historical heritage in its official identity.
