Special Goalkeeping Camp Underway for Indian Women’s Hockey Team

Bengaluru: A special goalkeeping camp for the Indian women’s hockey team is currently underway at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru, aimed at strengthening the team’s defensive unit ahead of key international tournaments this year.

The camp is being conducted by experienced Northern Ireland goalkeeping coach David Williamson and will continue until May 2, 2026. It is being held under the supervision of the team’s chief coach Sjoerd Marijne, who has emphasized the importance of specialized training for goalkeepers at this stage of the season.

Focus on Skill Development

The camp brings together some of the top and emerging goalkeepers in the national setup, including experienced custodian Savita Punia along with young talents Bichu Devi Kharibam, Bansari Solanki, and Madhuri Kindo.

The primary objective of the training program is to enhance coordination, reflexes, and match-readiness among goalkeepers as a cohesive unit. With a series of important international tournaments scheduled from June onwards, the initiative is seen as a timely step in boosting India’s defensive strength.

Building for the Future

Coach Marijne noted that the Indian women’s team recently delivered a strong performance during its Argentina tour, particularly highlighting the resilience shown by the goalkeepers against a formidable opposition. He added that such camps are crucial not only for current performance but also for nurturing future talent.

Junior goalkeepers are also training alongside senior players during the camp, providing them with valuable exposure and experience at the highest level. This integration is expected to help build a strong pipeline of talent for the national team.

Positive Response from Players

Senior goalkeeper Savita welcomed the initiative, stating that such focused training programs are highly encouraging for women’s hockey in India. She highlighted that the growing support for the sport is inspiring young players to pursue hockey professionally and aim for higher achievements.

Strengthening India’s Campaign

The camp reflects a broader effort by Indian hockey authorities to invest in specialized coaching and structured preparation. With international competitions on the horizon, the emphasis on goalkeeping excellence could play a decisive role in India’s performance on the global stage.

As the team gears up for upcoming challenges, the Bengaluru camp is expected to sharpen skills, build confidence, and reinforce India’s ambitions in women’s hockey.
