Mumbai: The rise of OTT has changed the entertainment landscape, creating more opportunities for actors and giving audiences a wider choice of content. Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan actor Rohin Joshi believes the shift has been positive for the industry.
“More the merrier. People can watch shows based on their preferred genres and formats. For actors, it brings in more opportunities, so it’s a win-win,” he says.
While OTT continues to grow, Rohin feels theatrical releases will always have their own significance. “The big screen will always hold a different value, as it is very much imbibed in our culture. But OTT has certainly broadened the definition of success. You don’t have to wait for the box office verdict. A good run on the web also means that many people are watching your show or movie from the comfort of their homes,” he shares.
Talking about his viewing preferences, the actor reveals that he keeps track of upcoming releases but is selective about what he watches. “I watch trailers of almost all shows coming up on streaming platforms to stay aware of what is being made in my industry. However, I watch very selective Indian shows and am a bigger fan of American shows, especially those set in small-town America,” he says.
Rohin also names Gullak’s latest season as his recent favourite. “I already loved the show. The way it captures drama and comedy in a small-knit family is so easy on the eyes and mind. Watching it makes me feel nostalgic and happy at the same time,” he adds.
Commenting on bold and explicit content on OTT, Rohin believes creative freedom should come with purpose. “If a scene warrants explicit or revealing content, it is good that we have this freedom on the web. But if it is purely for titillation, then it is just a misuse of the freedom being given to us on OTT,” he concludes.
