New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has highlighted its significant role in addressing human rights issues in India, with over 23 lakh cases registered since its inception in 1993. As of now, the Commission has recommended relief worth ₹256.57 crore to victims of human rights violations, underscoring its commitment to justice and equity.

- Human Rights Day Observance:
Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on December 10, marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”, emphasizes the practical application of human rights as a transformative tool for building a peaceful and sustainable future. - NHRC’s Contributions:
- Since its establishment under the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993, the NHRC has handled 23,14,794 cases, disposing of 23,07,587, including 2,880 suo motu cases.
- In the past year alone (Dec 2023–Nov 2024), 65,973 cases were registered, and 66,378 cases were resolved. The Commission recommended ₹17.24 crore in monetary relief for victims during this period.
- Recent Initiatives:
- The NHRC organized a national conference focusing on mental well-being, discussing stress at various stages of life—childhood, higher education, and workplaces.
- Other activities include camp sittings, spot investigations, and collaborations with statutory commissions and civil society to promote a human rights-centric approach.
- Global and National Engagement:
The NHRC remains active in fostering dialogue on human rights at both national and international levels, emphasizing the interconnectedness of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. - Celebration at Vigyan Bhavan:
President Droupadi Murmu will preside over the Human Rights Day event in Delhi, alongside NHRC’s acting chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani and Secretary General Bharat Lal. The event aims to underscore collective responsibilities in upholding human dignity and rights.
