Lucknow: The CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI), Lucknow, opened its laboratories, research facilities and campus to students and the public as part of celebrations marking the 85th Foundation Day of its parent organisation, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.
The initiative aimed to familiarise visitors with scientific research, plant science, biodiversity conservation and various applications of science and technology. More than 800 students, researchers and members of the public from 20 schools and colleges in Lucknow and neighbouring districts visited the institute.
Visitors toured advanced laboratories, the botanical garden, herbarium, museum and other research and educational facilities. Scientists and experts explained NBRI’s history, research programmes, scientific achievements and technologies and products developed for societal applications.
Students also interacted with scientists and asked questions about modern laboratory techniques, research opportunities and careers in science. Scientists encouraged them to pursue scientific inquiry and research.
Dr Zabir Ahmed, Director, CSIR-NBRI, said opening the institute to students and the public was an important step towards connecting society, particularly young people, with scientific research and innovation.
The institute will hold its formal 85th CSIR Foundation Day celebration on September 30, 2026. Dr Kanad Das, Director, Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata, will attend as chief guest. Employees completing 25 years of service and those who retired during the past year will also be honoured.
