Lucknow: On the occasion of the 12th International Yoga Day, a special yoga and legal awareness programme was organized at the District Jail, Lucknow, where inmates actively participated in yoga sessions aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being along with legal literacy.
The event was conducted under the directions of the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority and guidance of Civil Judge (Senior Division)/Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Lucknow Kunwar Mitresh Singh Kushwaha.
Yoga for Discipline and Mental Well-being
During the programme, trained yoga instructors guided inmates through various asanas and pranayama exercises. The participants were encouraged to adopt yoga as a regular practice to reduce stress, improve physical fitness, and develop a positive and disciplined lifestyle.
Officials emphasized that yoga plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process of inmates by promoting mental stability and emotional balance, which are essential for their reintegration into society.
Legal Awareness and Rights Education
Alongside yoga sessions, the District Legal Services Authority conducted an awareness programme for inmates, providing detailed information on free legal aid services, plea bargaining, Lok Adalat, and victim compensation schemes. Inmates were informed about their constitutional and legal rights and were encouraged to seek free legal assistance whenever required.

Message on Rehabilitation and Reform
Senior Jail Superintendent stated that such initiatives are instrumental in the physical, mental, and social rehabilitation of inmates. He added that while yoga helps in building discipline and health, legal awareness empowers inmates with knowledge of their rights, contributing to their reintegration into the mainstream of society.

The programme was attended by Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel Arun Kumar Mishra, Deputy Legal Aid Defense Counsels Ashish Kumar Jain and M.K. Singh, Senior Jail Superintendent, Jail Superintendent, Deputy Jail Superintendent, along with other prison officials and a large number of inmates.
The event marked a significant step toward combining wellness and legal empowerment, reinforcing the message of reform, rehabilitation, and positive transformation within correctional institutions.
